Binding words & Restless Dead: An Introduciton to Graeco-Roman Magic
This course explores magical beliefs and practices in the Graeco-Roman world, from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. Topics include how ancient Greeks and Romans defined 'magic' and distinguished it from other ritual practices, and how practitioners and their rites were portrayed in myth, fiction, and historical sources.
Additionally, examination of archaeological evidence and magical formulary texts like the famous 'Greek Magical Papyri' will provide a practitioner's-eye view of these rites. Throughout, a variety of "magical" practices will be covered, from divination and protective amulets to binding rituals and necromancy, and more.
This class will be in person but you can also join us online via zoom!
